Red Rock Hut is located on the wild west coast of King Island, Tasmania.
King Island sits in the middle of Bass Strait, between mainland Australia and Tasmania, and is known for its rugged coastline, world-class produce, and quiet sense of remoteness.
The Hut is positioned roughly halfway up the island, around a 25-minute drive from the main township of Currie and King Island Airport. It sits between Cape Wickham Golf Links and Ocean Dunes Golf Course, and close to some of the island’s most iconic surf beaches.
It’s a location that feels completely private, yet still connected to the best of the island.
The only way to reach King Island is by air. There’s no ferry or regular passenger boat service, just a short flight that brings you somewhere truly different.
In around 45 minutes, you’ll arrive on a rugged island at the edge of the world, where the air feels fresher, the pace slows, and the landscape opens up around you.

Once you land, it’s a scenic 25-minute drive to the Hut, a gentle introduction to the coastline, farmland and quiet beauty that defines King Island.
We highly recommend hiring a car as there is no public transport or rideshare on the island, and the best of King Island is found in the spaces in between.
Hiring a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, whether that’s long coastal drives, quiet beaches or a spontaneous stop along the way.
We recommend booking through King Island Car Rental for a seamless arrival.
However, if you’d prefer not to drive, we can also assist with arranging airport transfers to and from the Hut.
Yes! We’re happy to accommodate helicopter landings at Red Rock Hut by prior arrangement. Please get in touch and we can guide you on the best landing location and coordinate logistics for your arrival.
King Island is a year-round destination and experiences all types of weather, with each season offering something a little different. The Hut has been purposed built to be comfortable anytime of the year.
• Summer (December to February) brings longer days, warmer temperatures and ideal conditions for swimming and exploring the coastline. With extended daylight, it’s also one of the best times to visit for golf.
• Autumn (March to May) is often calm and mild, with beautiful light and fewer visitors. Sunsets at this time of year are incredible and sure to impress.
• Winter (June to August) can be wild and dramatic, perfect for enjoying the Hut’s fireplace, hot tub and sauna. There’s nothing quite like watching the storms roll in, or stepping outside to crisp blue skies between weather systems.
• Spring (September to November) sees the island come to life, with wildflowers, active wildlife and fresh coastal air. It’s a lovely time for walking, exploring and seeing the landscape at its most vibrant.
There’s no single “best” time, it simply depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for.
Minimum stays vary throughout the year, typically between two and three nights depending on the season.
If you’re short on time, please get in touch. One-night stays may be available on request.
Red Rock Hut is designed exclusively for up to two guests. It’s an intimate, adults-focused experience and not suited to larger groups. We do welcome those travelling with infants at the Hut and can provide a portacot on request.
For those travelling with family or friends, our main residence, Buttons by the Beach, is located on the same property and accommodates up to 7 guests. It offers a similar sense of privacy, with more space to spread out.
Check-in is from 3:00pm and check-out is prior to 10:00am.
Let us know your flight details and we’ll do our best to accommodate an earlier check-in or later departure where possible.
We love sharing our local knowledge with our guests, so ahead of your stay we’ll send through everything you need to plan your island experience, including our favourite restaurants, a curated Google Map of our top picks, the island’s weekly “what’s on” guide, along with options for hampers and local produce. We'll send your self check-in details three days prior to arrival.
We provide all linen, bath towels, beach towels, robes and slip-ons for the hot tub and sauna, along with eco-friendly shampoo, conditioner and body wash, so you can travel light.
No matter the time of year, we always recommend bringing a jacket, as it can be windy and cooler here on King Island than the mainland, especially at nights.
Beyond that, comfortable layers, something to wear outdoors, and your swimmers are all you’ll need to make the most of your stay.
Red Rock Hut is an award-winning, off-grid tiny house that blends thoughtful design with complete immersion in nature. Designed for one or two guests, it features a wood-fired hot tub and sauna with panoramic Southern Ocean views.
Surrounded by wildlife and raw natural beauty, it’s a place to truly unwind, or a base to explore King Island. World-class golf, surf breaks, untouched coastlines and some of Australia’s finest produce are all just minutes away.
With thoughtful touches and complete seclusion, Red Rock Hut offers a deeply memorable stay on one of Australia’s most remote and spectacular islands.
Not at all.
Many guests choose to stay in, enjoying the privacy, ocean views and amenities without needing to leave. With a well-equipped kitchen and our pre-arrival options, including hampers, everything can be taken care of before you arrive.
That said, if you feel like exploring, the island offers incredible produce, dining and experiences.
The Hut operates independently of mains infrastructure, powered by solar and battery storage, with water sourced from a natural spring and treated on-site.
That said, you wouldn’t notice you’re living off-grid. You’ll still enjoy strong shower pressure, a flushable toilet and air conditioning in summer, with a battery system designed to comfortably support the Hut.
The system is designed to be generous, but we do encourage mindful use, particularly during shorter winter days. During extended periods of cloud cover, a back-up generator is available and can be running within minutes if needed.
The Hut has been designed with every season in mind. It is fully insulated and double glazed, with an indoor fireplace, air-conditioning, excellent water pressure, a well-equipped kitchen, quality linen and thoughtful details throughout, so your stay feels effortless year-round.
It has been custom designed and built specifically for its location, ensuring comfort in all conditions while remaining deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.
Yes. High-speed Starlink internet is available, suitable for streaming, working remotely or staying connected if needed.
Mobile reception is available at the Hut, with Telstra offering the most reliable 4G/5G coverage, however it can be inconsistent at times. Other providers, such as Vodafone, may have limited or no reception.
If staying connected is important, Telstra SIM cards can be pre-purchased before arriving on the island or picked up from the local post office in Currie.
Completely.
There are no immediate neighbours, and the Hut is positioned to maximise privacy, with uninterrupted views across the landscape and ocean.
Yes, without a doubt.
The property is home to hundreds of wallabies and extensive birdlife, with the surrounding landscape largely untouched. You may also spot “Sammie” the local seal resting along the beach from time to time.
We ask guests not to feed the wildlife, as it can disrupt their natural behaviour, and to be mindful when driving to and from the Hut, particularly at dawn and dusk when they are most active.
On clear cloudless nights the stars are incredibly visible, and the Milky Way can often be seen stretching across the sky.
For the best viewing, we recommend booking around the new moon or when the moon isn’t full, as darker skies make the stars even more vivid.
On rare occasions, the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) can also be visible, though this depends on solar activity and conditions.
The cedar hot tub and sauna are both wood-fired and heated manually. The hot tub typically takes around two hours to reach temperature, depending on the weather, while the sauna takes approximately 45 minutes.
We provide everything you need, including firelighters, starters, kindling (including pinecones) and firewood. Axes are also available if required.
Full instructions are provided, and while we're not always on-site we are always contactable if needed.
Yes! We’ve partnered with local chef Amy from Salt & Thyme to offer chef-prepared Heat & Eat dinners, breakfast hampers, and locally sourced crayfish platters, all delivered to the Hut before your arrival.
Everything is made using fresh King Island produce, and we can cater for all dietary requirements (just let us know when placing your order).
These options are a lovely way to ease into your stay, whether it’s arriving to dinner ready to go or a slow morning with breakfast taken care of.
We will share the current menu with you prior to your arrival. To ensure availability, we recommend placing your order at least one week in advance.
Red Rock Hut is located around a 25-minute drive from Currie, the island’s main township, so we recommend picking up groceries and essentials before heading to the Hut. The main town is about a 5 minute drive from the airport.
IGA and FoodWorks are the two main supermarkets on the island, both located in Currie. They are open daily from 7:00am to 6:00pm, and 8:30am to 5:30pm on weekends and public holidays.
Yes. King Island is known for its exceptional produce.
Across the road from the supermarkets, the King Island Meat Providore offers an excellent selection of local meats.
For something uniquely local, the King Island Bakehouse is well known for its crayfish pies. You can also visit King Island Dairy for cheese tastings and a range of locally produced cheeses.
The IGA includes a wine and liquor section with a good selection of Australian wines, beers and spirits.
If it’s closed, takeaway beverages are also available across the road from the King Island Hotel.
King Island is known for its outstanding produce, from beef and crayfish to artisan cheese, with a number of excellent dining options across the island. As opening hours can vary and seating is often limited, we strongly recommend booking ahead. Check-out the local tourism guide on where to eat.
King Island offers a mix of wild natural beauty and world-class experiences.
Spend your days exploring coastal walks, quiet beaches and rugged shorelines, or take to the water with some of Australia’s most remote surf breaks. Golfers can experience two of the country’s top-ranked courses, while food lovers can enjoy exceptional local produce, from beef and crayfish to artisan cheese.
For a full overview of what’s on and to help plan your stay, we recommend visiting the King Island Tourism website.
Yes! There are two coastal walks directly from the Hut, heading north and south along the shoreline.
On windier days, we recommend heading back along the road you came in on. It’s around 6km to the main road and many of our guests enjoy using it for a run.
If you prefer to stay close, there’s also a short track around the property, taking around 15 minutes to walk.
However, some of the island’s most memorable walks are found further afield, including one featuring an exposed shipwreck. Details of walks from the Hut and our favourite island walks are included in the Hut’s guide.
Yes. We have private, direct access to the beach from the property, with white sand, turquoise water and a relatively sheltered stretch of coastline.
We’ll also share our favourite spot for a swim during your stay.
Can we go snorkelling or fishing?
Yes. The waters around the Hut are incredibly clear, and on calm days, snorkelling is a beautiful way to explore the rocky reefs and marine life along the coastline.
Fishing is also popular along this stretch of coast. Snorkels, flippers and fishing rods can be arranged with advance notice and prepared for your stay. We simply ask that you let us know if anything goes missing, so we can replace it for future guests.
A Tasmanian recreational fishing licence is required for any catch brought ashore. This can arranged online prior to entering the water.
We’ll share our favourite spots for both snorkelling and fishing, along with local tips, once you arrive.
Smoking is not permitted inside the Hut. If smoking outside, we ask that cigarette butts are disposed of thoughtfully and fully extinguished.
Unfortunately to protect the surrounding wildlife and environment we don't allow pets.
Our cancellation policy is outlined at the time of booking. As a small, boutique property, we recommend travel insurance.
