Sustainability at Red Rock Hut

Off-Grid by design

At Red Rock Hut, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We set out to create a place where you can enjoy comfort and luxury while knowing your stay leaves a lighter footprint on King Island.

The Hut runs completely off-grid, powered by solar panels and battery storage with enough capacity to run three tiny houses. Fresh spring water is collected on site and treated through a Puretec Hybrid filtration system, which removes sediment and kills up to 99.9% of bacteria. Natural gas heats the water, and we recycle or compost wherever possible to keep waste to a minimum.

Being off-grid doesn’t mean going without. Guests enjoy air conditioning, a wood-fired hot tub and sauna, and fast internet - all seamlessly integrated into our self-sufficient systems.

Caring for King Island

We are proud members of King Island Landcare, supporting local conservation projects that protect the island’s coastline, wildlife, and unique ecosystems. We also choose local suppliers wherever possible – from fresh produce for our hampers to handcrafted gifts – so that your stay benefits the King Island community directly.

Reducing our Emissions

We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact over time. Red Rock Hut is progressing through the Tourism Emissions Reduction Program, a structured pathway helping Tasmanian tourism operators measure and reduce their carbon footprint. This keeps us accountable and ensures we’re improving season after season.

Our Commitment

We see sustainability as an ongoing journey. Each season we look for ways to improve - whether that’s refining our recycling systems, contributing to Landcare, or engaging in new community projects. By choosing to stay at Red Rock Hut, you’re part of that journey too - helping preserve King Island’s wild coastline and supporting the people who live here.
